Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen: Which one is better?

Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis could be the single most important skincare step to include in your daily regimen. But with so many on the market it’s so hard to know which one is best.

Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, are becoming and increasingly popular alternative to chemical sunscreens. They work by reflecting and scattering the sun's rays, rather than absorbing them like chemical sunscreens.

Many people choose mineral sunscreens for their natural ingredients and perceived safety, but is one type of sunscreen really better than the other?

Here are some reasons why mineral sunscreens may be the better choice:

  1. Mineral sunscreens are generally considered safer for sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens contain a variety of ingredients, some of which can be irritating to the skin. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, contain only a few ingredients and are less likely to cause irritation.

  2. Mineral sunscreens are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Some people are allergic to the chemicals found in chemical sunscreens, but this is less likely to be a problem with mineral sunscreens.

  3. Mineral sunscreens provide protection immediately upon application. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, need to be absorbed into the skin before they can start working. This means that you need to apply chemical sunscreens 20-30 minutes before going outside, while mineral sunscreens can be applied right before sun exposure.

  4. Mineral sunscreens are more stable in sunlight. Chemical sunscreens can break down when exposed to the sun, reducing their effectiveness. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, are not affected by sunlight and continue to provide protection throughout the day.

  5. Mineral sunscreens are better for the environment. Chemical sunscreens can be harmful to marine life, as they can enter the water and harm coral reefs and other aquatic organisms. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, do not pose this risk.

Overall, while both mineral and chemical sunscreens can be effective at protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays, mineral sunscreens may be the better choice, particularly for those with sensitive skin, those prone to allergies and acne prone skin, and those who are environmentally conscious.

It's always a good idea to read the labels and do your own research to determine the best sunscreen for your needs.
